A big part of what makes Zorrie so compelling is its quiet, understated storytelling. Reading the book is like hearing my friend's older relative recount a tale of growing up in the rural Midwest over the dinner table. I grew up in the Midwest and can easily name people who are descended from the Zorries and the Harolds of the world. Despite that adjacency and somewhat-familiarity, Zorrie's narrative is one that feels far removed from my own, which was probably why it didn't resonate with me too deeply. It's well-written and elegant and unpretentious, but this is very much a slice-of-life narrative, so your mileage may vary.

On a sidenote, I found the Radium Girls bit super fascinating, and while focusing on that would have missed the entire point of the novel and created an entirely different literary product, I wanted to know more!
