Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Characters: 7
—I enjoyed Zorrie as a main character and thought the way she was was interesting. The majority of other characters felt pretty neutral to me until we got to Virgil, his wife and his son. The girls she works with a fun but I didnt really feel attached to them individually, they were more of a general enigma and representative if her life at that time.

Atmosphere/Setting: 7
—There is a strong Midwestern US atmosphere and setting. The sense of the time period is also strong but still lends some modernness/relatability between then and now. All that said, I wouldn't call this book atmospheric, I don't think that's it's goal.

Writing style: 7
—I enjoyed it for the most part but there was a quality to it that made it a little longer of a read. Something I can't quite put my finger on. I enjoyed it more by the end when I was used to it and had spent more time with the characters. It wasn't the same as the other book I read by the author but they also have very different vibes/settings/story styles etc.

Plot: 5
—There really isn't a plot (which is fine, the book is character driven after all). We basically follow a character journey and so there are ups and downs along the way but nothing else really driving the story.

Intrigue: 5
—There are a few points of this book I found very intriguing but for most of the book you are along for the ride. This book is more about the journey rather than the anticipation of a destination.

Logic/Relationships: 7
—There were a few relationships in this book I really enjoyed and felt very real (or pleasantly optimistic if not realistic). The logic of the book is solid as well. Nothing fancy but nothing that set my alarm bells off.

Enjoyment: 7
—I enjoyed the story a lot at times and there are certain things/ways about Zorrie that I think of often. There's a odd middle bit that kind of dragged for me causing me to put down the book. However, once I got going again I generally enjoyed it! Like I said, there is little plot/intrigue for most of the book so it wasn't a "I HAVE to keep reading" book and more of a casual read.

(This review uses the CAWPILE scale from Book Riot. If you are curious about the specifics, take a look there for more info! The only thing I’ve modified is my 1-10 to 5 star conversions to account for StoryGraphs 0.25 star increments.)

What a beautiful book! Nothing really happened, but that's the point. Lives are filled with our own experiences, the people in it, and what we choose to hold dear to us. The ending was extremely sweet and left me feeling whimsical and nostalgic for everything I've ever experienced. This was a nice little break.
