Although Zorra Underwood’s known for her hard work, the need to lie down overwhelms her in her old age. The woman herself, not her relationships, takes center stage in the telling of her whole life.
What a moving and profound little book! It is just the portrait of Zorrie, her farming life in the Midwest, during the Great Depression.
The beauty and the “simplicity” of it made me think a lot of Miss Jane (Brad Watson) and of course, Un cœur simple (Flaubert).
Highly recommended!

I loved this quote from another review: "The unsung lives of ordinary people sometimes make for extraordinary stories."
I enjoyed this book because it was a simple story of Zorrie's life. Interesting, but one of those books that was rather hard to pick back up once you set it down.

[3.5 stars] This was a quiet little book. It follows the protagonist through a life that reminds me of my midwest, midcentury grandmothers and their friends. I think the author did a good job showing how an ordinary life can also be remarkable.

A touching novel about a woman, Zorrie, and her life. Zorrie's life is unassuming and quite lonely, but the way Laird Hunt tracks her life, her hopes, and her loneliness is remarkable. It is easy to feel what Zorrie is experiencing, and understand her grief.
This is a very quiet, very beautiful book about the full life of an ordinary woman, in an ordinary setting. Zorrie endures many hardships during her life, all with good grace and a quiet strength and fortitude that was admirable. The last section of the book was heartbreaking.
Lovely writing and the story of a whole life told so compactly, but it never drew me completely in.
