The beauty of the final chapter redeems this one.

It's an interesting premise, and the English edition is well written at the sentence level. As for the intriguing relationship between colonial Germany and this vegetarian cultist, it might have been too understated and sly for my taste. My sense after finishing it is that the book relies on a kind of detached and ironic perspective to avoid creating either a really deep character study or a serious engagement with German imperial culture.

Another award winning book that features a child being raped.it was well written, but I wish I hadn't read it

Imperium has a lot of great stuff going for it. The setting is one not usually explored and relatively unknown to most readers, Engelhardt is a truly fascinating figure and makes for a great character, and Kracht has a really interesting writing style. My only issue with the book was that it felt very episodic. Considering how short the book is it really didn't give you much time to get invested and the amount of skipping around definitely didn't help.

Holy macaroni. Sometimes I'm that curmudgeon who loves Melville and Conrad and thinks no one in the 21st century will ever write a great tale of symbolic sea-faring. But throw in a little Candide, and this is the book. Brilliant.
