I enjoyed reading the book. The story is well told and interesting. However, I must say I found Hope very annoying. In real life I do not like people who feel sorry for themselves all the time and are obsessively negative. I don't think I misunderstood her but I really did not like her character. I only continued to read the book because of the actual story unfolding.

This was an enjoyable, sweet, and warm book. Even though it deals with heavy topics like difficult parenting and the impact of WWII on families, it still manages to keep you hooked and optimistic as you learn about the characters. The novel jumps back and forth in time between the present day narrator who owns her own bakery and is a single mom to a teenager, and her grandmother who is escaping Europe during WWII.

You get to experience a wide range of emotions, and I loved the quick chapters to keep it moving. I gave this two stars because while it was enjoyable, I would not say that it was great or a must read.

A sweet story and a quick read. Three stars for a predictable plotline and cliche dialogue--does the twelve-year-old really need to say like in every sentence?

One of the best WWII novels out there.  I recommend you buy boxes of tissue before diving in.

I could definitely do without the brattiness of the teenage daughter in this book. Everything else was perfect.
