I love a messy character that I can also root for. I wish we got to see more of her character development! I know it was brewing in there. Would have loved to see it come to the surface.
I have lots and lots of thoughts about this one & would love to discuss if any of y'all ever read it

Rating: 2.5. This was the second book this year for my book club. Honestly, I did not like this book 260 of the 303 pages... so that pretty much sums up my feelings. The story could have been so cool, but the main character was truly awful. She was toxic in so many aspects of her life and didn't have any character growth until the last 40 pages.
At first, she just started out really boring. Her job in social media was her entire personality, and I just don't vibe with people like that. Her passion for article writing on important topics that affect Black women could have taken this book in such an incredible way, but the author failed to do that and just focused on the MC's desire for fame and validity on the internet.
The part that rubbed me the wrong way the most was the toxic relationship between the MC and her GF. You're telling me you've been together for FIVE YEARS and are planning to get MARRIED and you "hated to concede anything, especially to Lex (GF)". After five years, you don't communicate or compromise with your partner? It's only your way or it's wrong?? Multiple times throughout the beginning chapters, MC would say how both she and GF took care of each other, but the author literally didn't write a single thing that MC did for GF. GF cooked, cleaned, was the at-home therapist, the foundation for stability, and so much more for MC, yet MC did nothing according to what was written. "Lex (GF) was making her out to be some kind of leech. After all Mickey (MC) had done to build a life for them, Lex was ungrateful". Peek delusion, truly. Also, MC would literally target GF's family trauma in an argument, using it as a weapon rather than a point of empathy when MC also has hella family trauma. Make it make sense??? MC literally feels like she's in competition with a 5-year old for fatherly love. Please seek therapy.
Also, the whole love interest from the hometown was INSANE. Literally, this MC is spineless and acting like a teenager. That girl was even more toxic than MC. MC wasn't listening to the advice from people who truly just wanted the best for her, friends she's had for 10+ years, and just completely disregarded the woman she WANTED TO MARRY and slept with another woman just because MC and GF had a fight and 'broke up'? PLEASE seek therapy.
This book only turned slightly better within the last 40 pages, when MC finally started to see how bad things were. Her self-worth was found in other people, she has no identity outside of her job, and she is toxic to the ones who love and support her. Frankly, the last 40 pages are TOO late in a book for some character growth, in my opinion, which is why this book was rated so low. I had such high hopes for this but was quickly let down and stayed there through its entirety.
To be frank, the writing wasn't bad, even the storyline wasn't bad. It was just the MC. Once again, it could've been sooososo good. It just fell so short.
There were some nice things to connect on. The writing about depression and how MC was dealing with unemployment was really relatable to me. That 'heaviness' can be difficult to put into words, and I think the author did it really well. I loved members of MCs family and how the family dynamic was played out. Also, it was just relatable about the messy things in life as a mid-20-something adult living life. These are the things that make it at least a 3-star and not a 2.

Is self sabotage a genre?
I didn't hate it, but I found myself frustrated and the ending was anti-climactic.
