this books feels like such an “almost”. there’s almost something really great here but it just misses it. it feels incomplete, so much so that i audibly went “what the fuck?” when i realize it ended. i’m fine with open endings but it felt as though NOTHING was resolved and the bits we got hinting to a resolution felt like a half assed attempt in doing so.
the book spent too much time on the romance with tee and mickey and did not balance out everything else. the whole “expose blog post” thing hangs in the background until coming down to the end of the book and then everything is rushed together so it all works out. the issues with the dad and new family is so nothing that i can’t even call it “half assed” because it’s not even halfly done. the tee plotline was good, ig. it’s pretty anticlimactic ending but at least i felt as though it was somewhat resolved. i can’t say that about any other plot point.
i will look out for what this author writes next because despite my harshness, i do think she can make something great. not everyone’s first book is a masterpiece but there’s good foundations here & it’s hard to find books that fit into that “women vs the void” category with a black lesbian mc (bonus points cuz she’s stud/femme) so i’m inclined to give her another shot.

honestly the first very natural authentically lesbian book I think I’ve read so that was powerful in itself and then alsooo reading this for the lavender evolutions book club led to so many friends so all around a win
