The premise of this book was a lot different than described. Felt like it was about an old situationship and the major points I was thinking would be the plot/theme of the book were only at the very beginning and end. I don’t mind a book that has loose ends but this felt unfinished.

3.5 — Not a huge fan of ambiguous / unfinished endings but still v enjoyable & powerful

This was more or less your classic millennial malaise book. I wanted to root for Mickey but she was just kind of awful and dismissive of everyone in her life except her grandma. She really didn’t deserve Lex by the end, which bummed me out because I wanted them to reconcile.

There are moments in this that elevates it above the “depressed millennial woman struggles with self-worth and goes home to find herself” - the realistic messy family and romantic dynamics - but overall I was a little bored and frustrated by the end.

This was ok, the writing was nice but it was a little slow, and I feel like it needed a little more of a wrap up. And I didn't love the audiobook narrator. Not bad though

This was the worst book I’ve read in a while. I don’t think it’s the fault of the author, the book was just completely misadvertised, the blurb stated the book was about a women Mickey who writes an article about racism she experiences and has to deal with the consequences of it. Mickey writes the article in the 3rd chapter, and the article is not really mentioned again until the 3rd to last chapter very randomly from the rest of the story. In 370 pages, only about 10-20 pages is about the article, the rest is about her going to her hometown and cheating on her girlfriend. Was profoundly disappointed by this book, sorry.

Whew! Everyone should just be single. This was a very real read. I feel like I knew all of these characters irl. I just want better for them, not as characters but as people. Never circle the block. Exes are exes for a reason.

Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me. I rarely complain about characters being insufferable because typically I find literary merit in their faults, but for this one, the main character was just genuinely insufferable. It's hard to read a book where someone is so stuck in their own head, and you can't wait for them to escape and see that moping isn't the way to exist, but then they don't get to that resolution. Which made for a tough read. I think what the text was trying to say about race and subtle racism in corporate industries was valuable, but I don't think these were the characters to tell that story with.
