Ok so I was pissed off by the Mickey like the entire second half of the damn book. I just kept yelling like what the hell b. Why you making these decisions lol. It’s the story to choose yourself every-time but I’m also like you’re burning bridges where you can just go to therapy and learn to communicate. Overall, entertaining lesbian story of love, determining your own fate and the lessons Black women have to learn early to survive in a world that is trying to push them aside at every turn.

The protagonist was infuriating as were some of her messy romantic choices (but I was also like… damn same). The plot danced around quite a bit; thought it would focus more on the ~ Tweet ~ and more commentary on being Black in media. But great writing and felt so relatable. Great soundtrack (so much Cleo Sol

I really liked this, and even with my brief foray in media, felt very true to experiences that occur.

This was another read that once you got going, you were in it. I really loved Mickey and thought she was written with such heart and care and could really appreciate all the thoughts racing around in her head.

recommend.

There are some beautiful moments in this book but ultimately it felt half-finished to me. In some ways you can see the journey the main character has gone on, but there seems so much more growth and personal development Mickey needs to go through and I don't understand why we don't get to see her do that.

The issue I found was that so much seemed unresolved by the end and just seeing a bit more, whether by increasing the length of the book or by shortening some of the chapters in the beginning and giving that word count to other areas, would have given the important parts more time to breathe and let us see more character development. Seeing Mickey actually have difficult conversations and put everything she has apparently learned into practice, even just a little, would have improved this and her in my eyes.

When I read the blurb I imagined a lot of what was featured there would be the set up (and introduced quickly) and the aftermath would be what was focused on which I think would have made for an interesting read. Instead, the action I excepted happened over halfway through and didn't seem as impactful by then. While a major theme of this book is avoidance, it also feels like the book is itself avoidant. So many relationships - between family, romantic partners, friends, business associates - have conflicts never resolved in a way that feels satisfactory, or dynamics which don't feel like they have been fully explored or analysed.
How on earth did we not see any repercussions for her publishing the letter? Why do we not see anymore of the relationship between Mickey and Lex? Even Mickey's relationship with her other friend Jasmine doesn't seem it has been explored fully. And there's still more I could add.

I do think there is a good story in there but for me its not the one I read. The hardback cover is beautiful though so at least it will look nice on my shelf.

solipsistic main character that the book has no perspective or sense of humor about. i enjoy mickey, a mess, but i mostly stuck thru it to see if the third person POV would ever reveal its purpose.

This book challenged me a little and I'm realizing it's because Mikey reminds me of myself. The overachieving black femme who feels like she needs to control the narrative. She was a little too self-centered for me and didn't take enough accountability for me. I spent most of the book not liking her.

I really like how the narrator wasn't Mikey and yet we were mostly purview to mainly her thoughts and a little bit of knowledge of the future. It was also great to get to know the characters intimately.

loved this book real bad, read it in like 3 days. it was complex, funny, authentic, intriguing, personal, and slightly heartbreaking at times. really hope this author releases more books, she’s talented and her voice is needed in lesbian literature.
