This book found me at the exact right time. Denton-Hurst does a fantastic job of distilling particular emotions and questions into her characters' lives: How do you reconstruct yourself, after the world has flattened you completely? Destroyed your dreams? How can you show up for others when you've lost your sense of self? And, after you've let down the people you love, how do you start again?
I loved Mickey and the other characters, and I felt completely seen by their humor, their frustrations, and the way they show up in the world. Mickey was imperfect, which, for me, only made her more alive, and I appreciated how this book took its time to show the beats of her emotional journey and way back to herself.
"Homebodies" will stay with me for a long time. I can't wait for Denton-Hurst's next.

wish there was more confrontation with the people in Mickey’s life. the book seemed to be more about her past and struggling with who she used to be and who she is now/who she wants to be. there are ppl in her life that either grate or bring light to it and I just hoped there would be a more direct calling in/out with these particular people.
also the advertised conflict of the novel being the racism she faced in the industry felt more like a surface level plot trope that was really just a backdrop for the bigger story of “sorting through the past and finding oneself”

The main character was so self-involved, ungrateful and immature, I found her impossible to like. I kept waiting to see growth but there just wasn't any. It was all self-pity, childish antics, and treating others like shit. No accountability, resolution, or redemption.
Based on the blurb, I was expecting racism in the media industry to play a central role but it was barely even a side plot.
Audiobook:
I liked the narrator's voice, but was constantly turning the volume up and down (or I just hear the parts she read in a quiet voice). It was frustrating.
