4.5 re-read (still brilliant!)
“Every ending is an arbitrary one. Every ending is, from another angle, not really an ending.”
The narrative follows on directly from the events of the second book. More of the same, but what a 'same'! Compelling characters, with a couple of new ones who are beyond colourful and totally entertaining, and fascinating settings, especially on the socio-political level, are once more expertly offered to us. There are action scenes, some breathtaking, but ultimately it is the psychological that is at the fore.
Loved it :O)

Man, what a ride was that. Epic space-opera, great world/universe-building combined with a small, very loveable cast and some very strong writing make for an amazing combo. The main protagonist is such a strong character, without really fitting any of the default hero-clichés.
Great ending to the trilogy. Clever and kept me guessing until the end. Great for SciFi nerds or anyone who just likes a well told tale.

This series is absolutely one of my recent favorites!

Satisfactory ending to the series. I got to the last third of the book before I realised where Ann was headed with the way she was going to finish the book and honestly I think it was the most satisfying ending to a book series I've read in recent years. Having No Great Upheaval because the thing you're contending against being a sizable(?) percentage(?) of a galaxy-spanning civilisation was such a welcome change from what I've grown accustomed to expecting from a book series.
may 2023 reread: after one hour without breq i’m ready for my next reread. please ann. please. more
genuinely do not know what i'm supposed to do with myself now i've finished this trilogy? like, am i just supposed to... exist in a world with no more breq content? ann leckie, say it ain't so!!!!!!!! (write more! WRITE MORE!!!!!!)

That was the ending? Really? It felt more like a cliffhanger (well not quite), maybe a better book two than the real book two (which had seemed, I'd hoped, like a placeholder to get to the interesting stuff in book three).
Book three does get more interesting, but what I wanted more of, what book 1 drew me in with the ideas around distributed personalities. But we only see that from Breq in it's absence, and Anander Mianai is hardly around (though more than book 2). And in the end we learn something tantalizing about her that I really wanted to hear more about.
Then's the ghost gate and the ship on the other side. Plenty of interesting potential there, not of it fulfilled.
