I picked this up after reading Rihanna Pratchett's lovely article in The Guardian on the third anniversary of her father Terry's death. I hadn't actually read any Moomins when I was little, I just remember the really odd Polish cartoons that were on ITV for a while. This is a sweet story, searching for Moominpappa and collecting a number of odd characters along the way. Unlike modern children's books, though, some of those odd characters are "insignificant" to the plot - they arrive, travel for a while, then move on out of the story on their own quests with no expectation of meeting again. I find that fascinating; perhaps a relic of a time when travel and communication was nowhere near as easy as now. In today's books, all characters seem to be Chekov's guns - they are all significant somewhere in the story. I think I will look for more of these beautiful editions even though my own children are moving out of the age range now - we all need a bit of innocent weirdness from time to time.

La première chose a savoir, c'est que personnellement, je suis très familière de l'univers des Moomins car je baigne dedans depuis très jeune. Je ne suis pas une experte pour autant; mais je les aime d'amour et j'ai énormément de respect et d'admiration pour Tove Jansson.
Ceci étant dit. Ce livre !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Je vais d'abord souligner la beauté des illustrations. Certaines sont "simples", mais tellement magnifiques et elles ont souvent un côté poétique à la fois. Bref, de quoi ravir les yeux.
Pour ce qui est de l'histoire, je n'avais jamais lu cette première histoire, alors j'étais super heureuse de pouvoir la partager avec Yosra. Quoi de mieux que de plonger dans un tel univers, tant aimé avec sa meilleure amie/jumelle ?!
C'est le livre idéal pour découvrir l'univers; de tester un peu. Même si c'est encore plus grand que "juste" cette histoire.
Ce sont des histoires parfaites pour presque tous les âges; alors vraiment, n'hésitez pas !! Les Moomins; c'est la vie.

The first thing to know is that personally, I'm very familiar with the world of Moomins because I have been immersed in it since a very young age. I'm not an expert though; but I love them and I have enormous respect and admiration for Tove Jansson.
That being said. This book !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will first highlight the beauty of the illustrations. Some are “simple”, but so magnificent and they often have a poetic side at the same time. In short, something to delight the eyes.
As for the story, I had never read this first story, so I was super happy to be able to share it with Yosra. What could be better than diving into such a beloved universe with your best friend/twin ?!
It's the ideal book to discover the universe; to test a little. Even if it's even bigger than "just" this story.
These are perfect stories for almost all ages; so really, don't hesitate !! The Moomins; that's life.
