This is the 3rd book in the You series. It is better than book 2 but not as good as the first book in the series.

How authentically CK can write from inside the head of a male sociopath astounds me and it’s an inner monologue that entertains me to no end. Automatic 5 whopping stars of course

Clever, sinister, personable.
A fan of Joe since book 1, I was keen for a continuation of the serial love-obsessed stalker's narrative. I just adore the style of these books, how Joe talks to his current 'love', and how he rationalises everything he and they do.
This picks up not long after the events of the second Joe Goldberg story, with a now wealthy Joe (after a payoff from a former lover) leaves him able to set up a home for himself and not worry about his financials, even volunteer at the local library, among the books we know he loves.
And now he's found small-town life, he's after a similarly-minded woman and a happy new life, forgetting his past. But Mary Kay, librarian, is soon worming her way into his heart, even with the ever-present best friend and teenage daughter in tow. She seems interested... is she? Can he win her?
Joe hasn't changed. I spent the whole audiobook smiling wryly at his justifications, at his actions, at the situations he makes for himself. He manages to remain likeable while still being creepy, insidious, dangerous and condescending.
This time around, there's a sweeter 'heroine' paired with Joe, smalltown girl with her own busy world, but a wonderfully catty best friend who is ever-present (their relationship itself is a small world in itself). There are also faces from the past who reappear unexpectedly, and new minor characters who make an impression.
Joe goes over and above in his attempts to woo Mary Kay, to amusing effect at times, and the patterns of the past don't seem to be far from his present.
I love listening to Joe books, I love hearing his voice talking to me/his love, it's the perfect format for this series. The book just flew by.
I'd be happy to listen to further Joe adventures, it seems his story may never peter out, there is always more drama, more tension and more entertainment to be had in Goldberg's serial love obsessions.

Good ol’ Joe is at it again. As charming as he is, you do not want Joe to fall in love with you. It could be the death of you. Third in the series.

So frustrating-- I quit reading at page 350. Did not finish. What a bloomin' mess of a book. It was okay... until it just. wouldn't. end. Ugh. Sorry, Ms. Kepnes... this book stinks.
