The second book didn’t disappoint at all! While Ian and Nate are still my favorite couple, Matthew and Arik are still super cute and hot.

I understand why some readers had a hard time warming up to Erik. He’s a villain turned captive and he’s got an attitude and so much trauma buried in that pretty body. Put yourself in his shoes, and you might be able to understand him better.

With that said, I adored Arik as a character. He’s complex and complicated with a squishy spot that made me squeal when Matthew finally found it.

Actually, none of these characters are “normal”. Every single one has flaws or baggage or trauma. Just like every single one of us do in reality. And maybe that’s why I connect so well with these characters and this story. No one is perfect but we get to watch these characters grow and become who they’ve always wanted to be.

I loved that Nate and Ian were still big characters in this story. And we saw more of their relationship and how Nate is growing into himself and becoming a better warlock. I just seriously appreciate that the author didn’t just shove them to the side and derailed their development because there’s a new couple to focus on. Linear storylines throughout multiple books are my favorite and I’m so glad I found this author!

I loved the first book and wanted to like this one, but the author treated one of the main characters as a victim. Here's the thing- most of the most violent human rights abuses are committed by people who "didn't have good choices." The word rape is thrown around a lot by someone who acts like they're being raped even though they're the one who forced the other person.

If you think Arik didn't sexually assault Matthew, you probably don't believe women can sexually assault men. This book is horrific and promotes the myths that prevent men from getting the support they need.

I just realized I never left a review for this. Well. I had a similar experience as I did with the first book, where the world building really interested me, and I loved the characters.... but then as soon as it gets exciting they just start having sex... and as an asexual... y'know I'm not really interested in that. (I don't mind it existing in books, and like the romance aspect, but I need more plot than that.)

But yea.

This book also was about the side characters from the first book, and then I saw the next book is about more side characters... And probably has nothing to do with any of the characters from book one or two... and I am not here for that. I know the third book will be interesting at first, hook me, then fizzle out with some wolf sex I have zero interest in.

I do however really appreciate that this author loves consent and writes characters with good morals. I have dabbed in Omegaverse themes before (accidentally) and been HORRIFIED by how rapey and awful those "romances" are, so it was nice to actually see them portrayed as good people.

Anyway......... I tried. Hopefully my friend will be happy I made it this far.

Due to Arik’s predicament, the majority of the story is plot instead of smut, but the smut that does happen is fantastic. And the way Matthew is always mindful of Arik’s past with sexual assault is a nice touch.

Minor gripe is it took way too long to learn Arik is a feline shifter. I get that he hides it from others, but the reader should at least know. Though now that I wrote that, I’m kind of miffed we never got a scene of Arik letting Matthew smell the real him without any of the layers of smell protection he has.

Another small gripe is how Arik’s pop culture sense of humor is identical to Nate’s. I guess that could feasibly mean they’re super compatible as friends, but it’s also meh in terms of lack of variety in character voices.

Read again May 2022, still a four star read for me! Arik is a lot like Nate and Matthew is a lot like Ian, but I'm not at all mad about that, lol. Arik is suuuuch a bitch I absolutely love it. This pack is a mess. Enjoying reading these books again.

I liked this, but not as much as the first book. Had a hard time wrapping my head around how everyone just sort of forgives Arik because?? But Matthew is a darling.

Another enjoyable story

I read book one almost a year ago and also gave it 4 stars. I had a hard time remembering it but I found I didn’t really need to to keep up with this story. I’m glad this is told from Arik’s point of view as I’m sure I wouldn’t have liked him with out seeing his motivations. As it was I could see his character evolution and growth.
