"Nets can be traps. But they can also be safety nets. You just have to know when to jump in."
I stared at her. I waited for a moment of revelation when everything would make sense and my spirits would be lifted.
"Sorry," I said at last. "I have no idea what that means."
These books are just so much hilarious fun. If there's one thing Rick Riordan can always manage to do, it's make me laugh, especially when his narrator is the arrogant but surprisingly cuddly god Apollo.
I think the reason I didn't like this one as much as the last one is because it didn't take place at Camp Half-Blood. Setting The Hidden Oracle at camp ensured a five-star rating from me because I had missed the rock wall and the amphitheater and the Big House and all the quirky demigods in their cabins. The Dark Prophecy is set in Indianapolis (what a random choice of setting), mostly in this Labyrinth-like building called the Waystation that seems to have a mind of its own. While very, very cool, it wasn't Camp Half-Blood.
That being said, Apollo's endless stream of heedless comments and observations were just as funny in a different setting. We have new characters and villains (which allowed Rick an opportunity to teach us yet more Greek myths––yay!) and old characters and villains. I LOVED getting to see Leo, Calypso, and Festus in the aftermath of leaving Ogygia and returning to the mortal world

and a Thalia cameo is always welcome––girl is a literal badassSpoiler
We also witness the glorious return of Grover Underwood, and I am so, so excited to see bumbling, adorable Grover leading Apollo and Meg through the Labyrinth. Rick is hinting we might see some of our favorite Roman demigods, too... Cameos upon cameos upon cameos...So, no, I didn't like this as much as the first one, but it was definitely worth reading and I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment.

I feel like I could write a dissertation on Riordan's use of the simile.
Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t TERRIBLE but it was slow tbh and I really dislike Leo and calypso together. As separate people I love them so much, just I think the pairing was disappointing and calypso deserves to have her own story that doesn’t involve love/men/romance yk. Her first friend was APOLLO literally a god like give her mortal friends please. Even once Meg arrives Meg and Leo are closer than calypso yk what I mean like give my pookie real girl friends please god.
