Despite the extremely short length of some of these stories (2 pages), each one is impactful and well-crafted. Having only been familiar with Gay's nonfiction prior to this, I was delighted to find that her talent extends to the fictional as well. Each character in this collection was complex and tangible, no matter how little time spent with them.

It was a quick read about the struggles of living in Haiti as well as the struggles of living in the Haitian diaspora. There seems to be a lot of conflicting feelings that the characters have towards their country; the love they have for the people, land, and culture that birthed them alongside the frustration they have for the struggle they must endure in order to survive there.

ayiti is a nimble, compact yet impactful collection that's able to say a lot w/ so few words. it's a work that makes me realize once again how rewarding reading can be.

some of the stories are merely 2 pgs long, yet the msg and setting bounce off the pg, then end w/ a banger. others - like my favs "sweet on the tongue" and "in the manner of water or light" - are longer, fully fleshed out, and emotionally stirring.

reading this conjures familiar landscapes and forgotten little details, while also offering a revelatory look into haiti and its ppl, adding another voice to this oft-silenced and -sensationalized group.

Very quick listen but excellent stories about love, loss, suffering, and life as a Haitian.

The descriptions in these essays painted a vivid picture of life in Haiti. I learned a lot through them.
