This was my first time reading Lorde’s work and I was so incredibly touched by her vulnerability, rawness and the power of her words. I really liked this book and took my time to slowly go through this one.

It’s a cop-out to say I’ve read the entirety of book: I read the snippets someone recommended to me.
Big take-aways from my limited stay with Lorde: (1) “reclaim…that language which has been made to work against us,” (2) “Anger is loaded with information and energy.”

"As we learn to bear the intimacy of scrutiny and to flourish within it, as we learn to use the products of that scrutiny for power within our living, those fears which rule our lives and form our silences begin to lose their control over us". So begins a powerful collection of works on speaking; on our differences, our sicknesses, and our secrets. I thoroughly enjoyed this compilation. Most of Lorde's essays and poetry are the types of things that wake you up to life, and remind you of how to live it.

I really took my time with this book. I split the book in half and paced myself through the prose. Simultaneously I would read a few poems here and there. Part of me wanted to finish this in January but I promised myself I would really meditate on the ideas, sense, declaration and overall voice of Ms. Lorde in this text. I'm REALLY glad I did. This was a book I wished was mine!! (I rented from the library :{) But this is a must have, must own, must buy. It doesnt matter if you read this a few poems at a time or blow through it at once, it is relevant and intentional and amazingly timeless. I am better because I read this book. This book was edifying, terrifying, beautiful, demanding, all types of emotions that I really didn't know poetry (in text) could provide. Once finished, I felt deeply sad that Ms. Lorde is not still with us to reach out! Such an important text, my sistas. Be Well.

Lorde is vital reading for anyone. I had encountered some of these speeches/essays in other works before, but I liked this collection a lot. (Read during the beginning of the 2023 war on Gaza and Lorde is an appropriate teacher always.)
Her prose is my favorite. As for the poetry, I am not a good enough poet to understand all of the nuances of her skillful use of the English language.
