There is so much good stuff to say about this book but I first want to acknowledge how fucking perfect Roxane Gay’s introduction is! This is what an introduction should be. Audre Lorde is fucking fantastic but everybody knows that, her writings are vulnerable and powerful. jessehelms a great fucking poem, all of them are great who am i kidding. can not recommend this book enough I loved how it was edited together to show a sort of time line. 10/10

Just a few of the quotes that stood out but trust me there
is much much more.

“So it is better to speak remembering we were never meant to survive”
“How the young are tempted and betrayed/ to slaughter or conformity”
“Narcissism comes not out of self-love but out of self-hatred.”
“Guilt is not a response to anger; it is a response to ones own actions or lack of action.”
“Am I to be cursed forever with becoming somebody else on the way to myself?”
“I cannot recall the words of my first poem but I remember a promise I made my pen, never to leave it lying in somebody else’s blood”

exceptional. there’s not much to say about this that hasn’t already been said. i got a lot more out of the prose than the poetry, as a good deal of the poetry didn’t really resonate with me (thus the 4 stars). but the prose is incredible. favorite essays include “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House” and ”Uses of the Erotic.” strongly recommend
