This was a very absurd story (in literary terms) with direct psychological influences as well as gothic undertones. Considering it was written in the late 19th century, it gives us a scoop of how mental health issues were treated or in this case mistreated in those times. the husband pretty much never listens to what she has to say and they have her totally isolated even from her own child. the application of colour and olfactory imagery is used to determine her state of mind as well as create a mystery which was maintained throughout the story right till the end. The open ending gives us a chance to interpret whether what we read was real or her imagination all along. There's a lot to unpack and might need a reread.
