Love it

This book sat on one of my shelves for years until I finally decided to read it. This may sound mean, but it ended up being really boring and quite forgettable. The female characters were poorly written and the depictions of their appearance’s were misogynistic. The story itself was bland and could’ve been a CSI episode. The random sex scene towards the end was awkward and unnecessary. The slang and wording in general was way too British for me. I love a good plot twist, but in this book, the killer was not difficult to guess. Also, none of the characters felt well developed.

This is a fantastic debut police procedural book. It is a fast paced crime thriller with a lot of twists and turns with a great surprise ending . The protagonist DCI Erika Foster is a kick ass strong woman who fights to get justice for the victims and does not care about police politics. She is not above embarrassing or blackmailing her boss and friend Marsh who wants to do the right thing but gets swayed by politics. The end was great and I did not see it coming . Overall a great read if you like police procedures and this book will keep you guessing till the end .Cannot wait to read the next installment in this series THE NIGHT STALKER

Spannend, spannend, spannend! Leest zeer vlot en neemt je helemaal mee. Een aanrader!

This is the start of a new series but it's clear early on DCI Erika Foster has a lot of history. She's been a cop with the Met for 20+ years & is just back from bereavement leave after losing her husband in a takedown that went horribly wrong. Is she ready? Well....
When the body of a beautiful young socialite is found under the ice in a boat house, it ignites a media frenzy. Her wealthy father sits in parliament & is no stranger to controversy. Superintendent Marsh has known Erika for years & requests her presence at Lewisham station to head up the investigation. But taking over another DCI's case doesn't exactly make for a warm welcome.
In short order, she's dealing with a vindictive colleague, a nasty homeless woman & mounting pressure from above to catch the killer yesterday. All before she even has a place to live.

This fast paced police procedural features a strong female MC who throws herself into the investigation in an attempt to numb the pain of personal loss. At times she seems reckless as though she has little left to lose. And some of her actions may make you question her mental stability.
What's done very well is the slow drip of clues as the story progresses. Just when you think you have the killer in your sights, the cops uncover a tidbit about another character that puts them firmly in the lead as a suspect.
As the tension builds, we become aware of the killer's fixation on Erika. Their actions have a gaslight effect on her shaky emotional health & add to her sense of isolation.
It all comes to a head with the final showdown between Erika & the killer. And her survival will depend on whether or not she's won over some of her new colleagues.

It's a quick read with plenty of subplots, action & red herrings to hold your attention. By the end, Erika has some choices to make & I look forward to seeing where she lands next in book #2.
For fans of Sarah Hilary's "Marnie Rome", M.J. Arlidge's "Helen Grace" or Anne Frasier's "Elise Sandberg" series.

I snarfed this book down, it was so compelling. I found it in my local half-price bookstore. Erika Foster is an incredible character who is relentless in her search for answers and justice. I cried on page 297. I wish everybody had such a supportive father figure. It is unlike any police procedural I have ever read.

3.5 stars. A good book, not great but worth the time to read.
