[1976] (Translated from German) The account of a descent into insanity, the description of the mind folding in on itself, the psychological torture of solitary confinement was vivid. The chess board as battleground was an interesting choice to tell this story and worked well. I wasn't crazy about the main character's sitting down with our narrator and basically just relaying the whole backstory. I think I would have rather had the main character be the narrator. Paced well for the short read that it was. As always, frustrated by now knowing how much of what I am reading is author and how much is translator.

♟️Ich dachte ja dass ich diese kurze Novelle in einem Sitting wegsnacken kann aber irgendwie hat mich die Geschichte nicht stark genug mitgerissen. Die Handlung war an sich interessant, aber sie hat leider keine großen Emotionen in mir geweckt. Bei nur 87 Seiten muss mich nun mal alles überzeugen, knapp die erste Hälfte fand ich allerdings so langweilig, dass ich mir wenig bis gar nichts merken konnte.
