read from african american lit class

as this is a nonfiction book--and a classic that focuses on slavery and is written by a former enslaved individual--i don't feel right rating it on anything i would generally rate a book on. i think douglass's experience is extraordinary and he is a phenomenal writer so this is automatically getting 5 stars from me.

i think this is a great piece of writing and even though i read it for class, i'm very glad i did. i think this is a book anyone could benefit from reading

Frederick Douglas was a slave who was born into slavery. He was shuffled around to many places and was rarely ever treated kindly by his owners. Despite it all, he learned to read and write. At first by one of his masters until it was forbidden and then on his own. He also went on to teach other slaves how to read and write as well.

Have you ever read a book that you get so absorbed in that you forgot that you aren't in the story? A book that you are so engrossed in that you have to know more? You can't stop reading and then search for more details about the story and it's contents? This is one of those books for me. I just could not get enough of it. I think I put as much research time in as I did reading the book!

What makes it even more impressive is that this was a real person. One of his books was very influential towards the abolition of slavery! I intend to read all of his books. I'd definitely like to see if there are books written about him as well. This was a great man who lived a life to tell about and did great things despite of all the obstacles in his way!

I do recommend this book! I fully encourage people to read it. I encourage anybody to read anything having to do with historical things. It really can be a very eye-opening book. I fully do intend to read the rest of his books. I can't wait to get my hands on them!
