Freddy is a cool dude. Very easy to identify with. Communicates the tribulations of slavery well. He's also quite a strategic thinker, who thought carefully about how to improve his situation. This gave it an element of "solve the puzzle of how to escape slavery" which got me both more invested in his struggle and intellectually engaged.

I read this for a university module. I enjoy history so a historical autobiography of a slave was interesting but I found it hard to read as it was an event by event recap of his captured life however not all of them intrigued me and so found it hard to read through those parts as all were needed to understand his life and mission for freedom

If there is any section of this book that I think more people should be required to read his Letter to His Master

we read this in my english class this year. the book is short and can be a quick read. its important to read this book if you want to explore the roots of america and american literature. douglass takes the reader into the true life of slaves.

Obviously a very important book, but I just didn't think it was spectacular. I really don't have much of an opinion on it at all -- I agree with the message wholeheartedly, but it just didn't inspire too much of an overall impression other than sending the message across that slavery is a horrible thing.

This book provided a much needed, in depth insight into slavery in the 19th century. Before reading this story I was ignorant as to the horrors that Slavery brought on and it's definitely opened my eye to such an important part of history.
