I NEVER read memoirs i find them the hardest things to get through. Knowing that, i set out the read this book and I do not regret it. I am taking these words and these messages with me and the book captured my attention from the first sentence. This work was inspiring and moving and makes me want to talk. My rating is not in regards to the writing because that is a 5 rather its my own personal tastes and this is simply not a genre that I would gush over. I value the lessons I am taking from this book and Im grateful to have read it.
I am sorry that I never read this sooner. He was an excellent writer and wonder of a human being to behold.
"When kept in Mr. Gardner's employment, I was kept in such a perpetual whirl of excitement, I could think of nothing, scarcely but my life: and in thinking of my life, I almost forgot my liberty."

this a 3 stars because i was reading this for school.
I usually stick to very modern Literature but this was actually very easy to read and understand despite being written in 1845. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about this point in history.
Very powerful first-person history. A must read for everyone.
I was especially interested in how Mr. Douglass described that those slaveholders who claimed themselves to be religious were the worst offenders of brutality and subjugation. Sounds sadly familiar, almost two centuries later.

Frederick Douglass' memoir still holds today. A novel on Douglass' uprisal, redefinition, and journey in the 1830s, slavery America. He writes with eloquence and unwavering faith and in light of the many hypocrisies of a "Christian" America. It's crazy how his words still reflect today, even though written over a century ago. A must-read for this Black History Month!
