I understand that this book is full of historical value and a good look at the past. I also understand and believe it was written in the tone that it was to gain more sympathy from the people who might have read this book at the time. I had to read this book in high school and then again in college, plus I recently reread the book. I got the chance to talk the book over with several history professors and several black people I went to school with. The agreement was it is just him whining about life. As a slave he was educated and no mention off major mistreatment which was better than ninety percent of other slaves who would have given anything to have his life since it was close to freedom. No, I do not condone slavery in any fashion or form but the book is a bad representation of slavery at the time since it paints such a slime picture with a narrow view.

Heart-rending and fascinating, and a far more palatable narrative style for modern readers than I had imagined. A classic for a reason.
