Her candor and vulnerability make up for a lot of the privilege. The audiobook is a must.

“This Will Only Hurt A Little" is a memoir full of stories and events that made Busy Phillipps the person she is today, from childhood through her teen years and into adulthood. I loved how much you could hear her voice through the pages. For fans of her Instagram stories, the tone of her book will feel familiar; it's a conversation with your friend.

A lot of her stories have the same underlying theme: She just wants to fit in and be seen. Don't we all? Yes, there are certain parts where her privilege shows, but (A) what do you expect? She's a celebrity. At least she isn't arrogant about it. And (B) there are also plenty of parts where she's a regular person, with regular feelings and emotions, just like the rest of us.

I have a feeling that people who don't like this book might feel that way because they just wanted to read a celebrity's memoir spilling all the deets on other celebrities. This doesn't read like a celebrity's memoir. This reads like it's a woman telling her story, because it is. It's a testament to women's strength. I loved it.

Do yourself a favour and read the audiobook. Busy tells you her story as if you were having a conversation with your best friend. It was a quick read and I honestly believe this was due to her presentation style and feeling like any given of part of her life could have happened to someone I know (if we swapped acting for some other job).

On a serious note, someone please seriously teach the girl some budgeting skills. 🤦🏻‍♀️

3.5 ⭐️. While I love her honest voice and strong personality, there were a few times I felt she should have held her thoughts in. I relate to that though.

Loved this book, loved Busy’s writing style - felt very conversational and her personality just jumped off every page

This is a pretty interesting book because Busy Philipps lets it all out. She dishes out dirt on Freaks and Geeks, Dawson's Creek, and general Hollywood. She also is very open and honest about the highs and lows of her personal life. I listened to this book and she really pours emotion into certain events. You can hear the love in her voice when she talks about her daughters and her goddaughter, Matilda. You can also hear the total heartbreak when she deals with her roommate's boyfriend dying suddenly and learning about Heath Ledger's death.
While she is clearly not perfect (she cheated on a few different people and admits to some dark things), I appreciate that she didn't hold anything back. Reading about how the cast of Dawson's Creek was by the time she joined in season 5 or how James Franco was a pretentious dick was very entertaining. If you're not a fan of Busy at all then I don't know why you would bother reading this book. If you love any of the shows she's been in then I definitely think it's worth it
