Listened to this one cos Busy read it herself and it was fucking lit.
emotional funny sad medium-paced

I genuinely enjoyed the stories, though some from her youth  made  me so sad/mad at her family and society. I knew some of them already, and it felt a touch dated at times, but not in a bad way. Busy is perfect as narrator of her story and I’m glad in listened!

Read this on audio and it was super raw and unwavering. I want to now watch Freaks and Geeks or see other things she’s been in.

5 stars, bc it’s Busy Phillips. And I love her.

Nope. Nope. Nope. While parts of this are laugh out loud funny overall its not worth the time. A lot of complaining and a lot of unnecessary crying.

I love Busy (even named my cat after her back in 2007!), so I pre-ordered the audio version months ago. I devoured it on a 10-hour flight today and, although I could’ve done with a liiiittle bit less swearing (I’m not even a prude), I really enjoyed learning more about her life beyond what we see on Instagram or People.

Some trigger warnings for deeply personal and emotional issues related to relationships and body shaming.

"This Will Only Hurt a Little" is the second audio book I've ever listened to (which does make me a little like 'did I really READ it?' but whatever), and I'm SO GLAD I did. I'm sure the book would have been just as compelling to read, but hearing Busy (who I feel like I know personally thanks to Instagram stories) read it the way she wanted, with the voices of the people she knew, was absolutely stunning. What a narrator! The book is honest and raw and beautiful and ugly and absolutely everything a memoir should be. Love. I shall update this review after she and I become best friends.

I enjoyed the audiobook and appreciate how raw and real Busy was, even about pretty traumatic experiences and times that she fucked up pretty badly.

2 / 5

Dang. I LIKE Busy Phillips a lot. I love Freaks and Geeks, I like Dawson’s Creek, and I like her Instagram stories. I too thought her friendship w/ Michelle Williams was ~goals~. But this book, woof.

First, it’s a celebrity memoir. And I should not have been fooled into thinking that because it was from a cool girl that it wouldn’t be mired with all the same issues that celebrity memoirs ALWAYS have. The biggest one that jumps out here, is that significant moments in Busy’s life just aren’t narratively interesting. I’m positive that 9/11, and Trump being elected absolutely WERE important moments in here life, as they were for everyone, but she doesn’t offer any new insight here, so while I’m sure it’s TRUE, hearing “Trump was elected and I was scared and sad for my daughters” would be in everyone’s memoir and lacks impact here.

The biggest issue though is that it’s written in suuuuuch a conversational tone. I’m sure this is a feature, not a bug for many readers and Busy fans, but it made it feel thrown together, or even dictated.

Also, not sure this is cool to say because it does seem like she was pretty open and candid, but both Busy and her husband Mark come off like dicks in this book. But, maybe we all would if we honestly wrote about our lives from childhood – 36.

I am apparently the only person on the planet who hasn't seen Busy Philipps' Instagram stories...but after reading this book, I will definitely be following her on Instagram, and checking out her new talk show, Busy Tonight on the E! Channel (she has had some amazing guests so far). Busy is notable for being in the cast of Freaks & Geeks, Dawson's Creek, Cougar Town, among other shows and movies.

This memoir started a tad slow for me, but I still enjoyed it because the Arizona location of so many teen adventures were just down the street from where we lived back in the 1990s. I am convinced that she was hanging out with her friends within walking distance of my house! I could have been in the book!

I enjoyed the book - especially the second half - and have turned from what I would perceive as a Busy Philipps acquaintance to a Busy Philipps fan (AND Insta-Follower).

Busy has a lot of opinions about the male dominated entertainment business, and a fascinating story about Blades of Glory (I am still angry). Plus a few heart wrenching tales...in some chapters, you can hear her narrating through her tears on the audiobook.

Busy is the real deal, and this book has made me come to the realization we need to become best friends. I wish her much success with her new talk show!
