It's a great story, but some "Oh come-on!" coincidences keep it from being a 5 star read.

I enjoyed the dive into the crew of the Rocinante's backstories juxtaposed with Belter machinations.

Book 4 was good, but almost too familiar: Holden is righteous to a fault, Alex is an expert pilot, Naomi has a brain blast at the last minute, and Amos gets shot. I was worried that Nemesis Games might be my last Expanse book, but it instead blew away every expectation. We finally get an exclusive focus on our four heroes. They go in different directions, having their own intense adventures that push their character development into new yet logical directions. The Expanse world itself is completely upended. Once I started, I couldn't stop. This book made me realize how much I care for this rag tag crew, and supporting characters like Bobbie, Fred Johnson, and the always-delightful Avasarala. This is a game changer for the Expanse universe, as well as a thrilling quartet of character stories for our heroes.

This part of the saga of the Expanse might be a slight step back but they do get credit at the end. It seems much like a movie series or TV show that decides after years now is the time to give us some back story on our characters. It annoys me in a lot of contexts because we know the players and they all go on their own mini adventures before coming back for the part of the story I actually care about.

It's not to say that it isn't good because it is. But it does feel like high quality filler that you will need for the next adventures and not enough of a stand alone. I had read the summary before yet thought the ending was jarring still when I got to it. But it gets credit because I am so hooked by the characters. This one has more eye rolling characters in it than the last one however and this series has had its share of moments that really are nonsensical but explained by something otherworldly, while this one has things that I felt like happened because we just had to get to the next point so don't think about it too much. But I'm still invested regardless.
