I'm confused why this isn't more famous. I'm confused why there isn't a movie adaptation. It's a compulsively readable melodrama with a Toni Morrison endorsement on the back cover, what's not to like.

Since it just came out and I've been listening to it a lot, I have to say other than an absence of horses, and cowboys, this novel pairs well with Beyoncé's album Cowboy Carter and has a lot of overlapping themes.

I really enjoyed this one . The ending saddened me but I appreciated how realistic it was for the story . Sugar was such a complex character who had been given the short end of the stick in life . It was disheartening when she met people along her journey who took her in and showed her that she was worthy of love but she wasn’t able to accept that due to her past and how she’s been treated . This is a story that will stay with me for a while .

Also the writing was really beautiful the descriptions of the town and metaphors used were so good and the narrator did a good job of conveying this.

I think the author is a great storyteller and overall I was very interested but I just wish there wasn't so much language and graphic descriptions and I believe that there are some people that would be triggered by some of the situations in this story.

Sugar. Precious Sugar. My heart broke for her on every page. I couldn’t help but think, “My God!! How much more”?

Pearl. Mother Pearl. Haunted by grief and loss in so many different ways. But yet, Sugar pulled her out of the darkest pit you could imagine. A beautiful friendship developed and transitioned into a mother daughter relationship. Both of them needing one another but not sure why.

This book is nothing short of incredible! I found myself thinking about Sugar during my work day. Wondering what she was doing and how soon I could get to my book to find out! Bernice McFadden has officially gained a new appreciative fan. I know that this story will stay with me for a long time. I will never forget Sugar! Never.

I went into this book completely blind and was very shocked by how it played out. It definitely kept me interested and wondering what was going to happen next. I will definitely read the second book to see if it continues sugar's story.

very promising in the first half, but then it literally got so bad after. its like she was being rushed by her editors or something
but no its just bad writing. if you’d like to see a dark-skinned woman get essentially tortured and never really have good day then read this book.
