A picture book by Chelsea Clinton with a two-page spread for each of thirteen American women who have been and done remarkable things despite (usually) men telling them no. There is a good mix of diversity: ages, racial/ethnic, and geographic, but nothing stood out as LGBTQIA+ to me. Additionally, I think the content may be too challenging for the young readers who will be read the book.
We need this book, we truly do. This is why so many people are raving at the mere premise of this book. However, it does not live up to the hype.
There are great things about this book: the leaders in this book are well curated and it is smart to repeat "she persisted" in every story. I must admit that the stories need to be short for children, but they are TOO short and lacking in detail. The adult reader should be advised that she should read the book first and research these leaders, because this book only invites questions that you will need to answer - and how many of these people can you pull true answers for off the top of your head? (And you can't suggest that you research this together when trying to get a young one into bed).
This book can be a great jumping-off point, but leaves more questions than answers. Be prepared.

There are familiar historical figures alongside important women I’d never heard of, keeping it from being run-of-the-mill. The last page made me tear up.
What wonderful mini biographies of women who lived through adversity to become powerful and loved. Woman who made an impact on american lives. A wonderful story to share with girls and boys.
Cute children's book. I kind of wish the last entry was Sally Ride instead of Sonia Sotomayor. The ending felt abrupt, but otherwise was enjoyable.
Starting the new year tradition that my first book of the year will be read with my children and inspiring.
This book tells succinct and inspiring tales of 13 women that was truly enjoyable with a quote from each woman as well.
Very enjoyable.

I listened to this on Scribd. I enjoyed it, but I hadn't done proper research about the target audience. I should have. It felt like there wasn't enough information about each woman to really understand not only what their contributions were but also the impact of those women's actions. I would have preferred it if Clinton had focused on 5 to 10 lesser-known women and provided more details about them. Regardless, I appreciate Clinton's determination to enlighten young ones about persistent women who have changed history!
