A really nice trick Schmitt presents us in this tiny little book: he lets a terminally ill boy experience every day he has left as if it were a decade, and in this way Oscar lives a "full" live. The candid tone of the little boy reminded me very much of the Little Prince by Exupery, including the wise-cracking and the fairy tale-atmosphere. Occasionally this results in very touching passages.
But that's all for the positive remarks. I found the character of the Pink Lady too sugar sweet and the same goes for the wisdoms and religious truths that are sold on almost every page.
There is a striking parallel with "La vie devant Soi" by Romain Gary (published under the pseudonym Emile Ajar), which also has a 10-year-old boy under the care of an elderly Mme Rosa (coincidence? this book was published long before Schmitt's). But that book really is much more realistic and in-depth than that of Schmitt.
