I dont remember reading Practical Magic, so this prequel feels like a glimmer of the lineage to come. Of course, theres resaid phrases and a comforting sort of existence that Id say this falls into. There is abuse, but no SA, which brings my comfort level for this book 'up'. There is also a transformative sense of character development, over generations. Theres mild outside cultural influence, and Jewish praise. It reflects a written similarity to Chocolat.

This book has been sitting on my TBR shelf for so long, but now I finally got to finishing it.
I have always loved Alice Hoffman’s works - first “Ingo” when I was in 5th grade, and then (unknowingly) Aquamarine and Practical Magic as movies, and then read some of her works as an adult (i.e.: Here on Earth, The Invisible Hour)..
This book was, as the comment on the cover states, “Heartbreaking…and gorgeous”. I loved the steady pacing of it all as well as the character change. I’m also a severe sucker for strong mother-daughter dynamics, throw in your his-fic content, with a dash of Salem Witch Trials, and some feminine rage.
As a side comment, I finished Slewfoot by BROM on Sept. 9th and picked this book up immediately to “fill that spooky void” (since Halloween is almost upon us). I will say, I am glad I read this immediately. It didn’t necessarily fill the spooky-horror void I wanted, but definitely helped fulfill the Salem and Witch type vibes I’m aiming for.
I’m 100% reading the next book of this. It was just so satisfying of a read with wonderful pacing that got me wanting to read more (I mean…shit, it’s literally 12:36 AM and I have work in the morning, lol).

The perfect witchy book to read at the beginning of Fall.
I adore this book. As a woman who has been tied to “occult” things and beliefs, I found this to be such a soft and powerful take on witches. Hoffman’s pacing allows you to process the story without being overwhelmed. I could vividly picture emotion with her writing, and became enveloped by the Owen’s story. As a woman, as a witch, as a lover, I absolutely adore this book and am very excited to continue the series.

Took me a little bit to get into, especially with the old-timey way of writing. Really started feeling so cozy and spooPy from about halfway through til the end. Can’t wait to read the next one!

Really good, the writing just feels so profound and meaningful. The characters are also so complicated and feel so real. The story was twisty and turny, while also being kinda slow and methodical. It was so interesting to see the beginning and all of the origins of the traditions we've seen in the other books.
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Animal death, Death
Moderate: Pregnancy, Colonisation
