This is the sort of book you need to read a few times to understand. And one I'd probably love if I had to read it for a college lit class where we pulled it apart (no, really, I relish that sort of thing). The bones are fabulous. I can tell so much thought went into the structure of the story, the characterizations, the underpinnings of the plot. But the bottom line is, I couldn't figure out what was going on half the time, the characters all blended together (and the names didn't help), I couldn't feel the emotions (and they should have been off the chart) of anyone besides the main character, and this was a slice of life story set in extraordinary times that aren't explained or followed up on. Very strange little book!

A short, weird, dark, kinda funny book about a gang fixer during an apocalyptic flu epidemic. I think the premise is more interesting then the premise but I enjoyed reading it.

I never dreamed I would meet a book I so actively hated. Every little detail, from the idiotic turning away from spelling conventions to the idiotic cliched names to the idiotic anti-wit of the dialogue. Pure, unadulterated idiocy. I hate this book. I loathe this book. The author and translator should never publish again. I mourn for the poor papers which must bear tattooed onto their faces these idiotic words.

4.5 STARS

This is quite different than the other Herrera novel, [books: Signs Preceding the End of the World], that I read a few years ago. I remember really liking the atmosphere of that story, which is definitely continued here, but subject-wise they are vastly different. This one is more of a classic noir, containing all the tropes that come with that, both good and bad. For only a 100-page novel, it has quite a few explicit sex scenes that seemed to take up a good portion of the story; tbh I could've done without some of that excess. Overall it did feel a bit more like an experiment in style or genre than in a very substantive novel.

"On other occasions he'd convinced himself that even the most twisted men deserve a chance, since people, all people, are like dark stars: what we see is different from the thing itself, which has already disappeared, already changed, even a single second after the light or evil has been discharged. But this..."
Devoured this one in one sitting, too, which is always a sign of quality. The story may be a fairly simple (and vague) one, but the atmosphere of the setting and the outlines of the characters are impressively solid.
