I think it has the makings of a great trilogy, and it's a pretty good book. Isabel is not on fire for the revolution or for the Tories--she's on fire for whoever can keep her alive. And while that might not make her as conventionally interesting, I think it's a lot more realistic. I think the best thing that Anderson did for Isabel was
Spoilernot having her absolve Lady Seymour for being a "nice white lady." As Isabel put it--a person doesn't want to be bought and sold like a basket of eggs, even if the person cracking the shells is nice.

This is a beautiful and well written book. It sucked me in immediately and I simply did not want to put it down. Amazingly well done.

Not bad. Actually my first historical fiction that includes the American revolution. Learned a fair amount.

I really wanted to like it more than I did. It is the story of a black slave during the revolutionary war. It is her search for her freedom that was promised to her and then taken away.

This book is part of a trilogy...while reading it I did no think I would be interested in reading the rest but I now think I will read the next book. I would like to know if things get better for Isabel. Maybe I am a glutton for punishment...plus I already checked it out of the library.

A preteen girl told me to read this and it's extraordinary. Relays history alongside that of a fictional child that rings so true it hurts. Tough reading. And all the while I wondered what my reading advisor thought when she read it. That will be an interesting conversation.
