Excellent. One of my contenders for best book I've read this year. A languid pace, one that lingers on little details that may not seem *important* at the time, but are revealed to be in a very gradual unravelling. What I enjoyed most was how this story leads you to believe it's going to pan out one way, checks you, shows you your assumptions were wrong. I found it very satisfying, and the ending got a cheer from me lol. It felt earned and real.

The author does have a tendecy to *end scene* as a character stares out at the landscape, contemplating their place in infinity lol. I can see why some may find it irritating, that's the sort of detail that endears me to a writer, personally.

I am inspired to read more Tan Twan Eng after reading this book, as well as the Somerset Maugham short story from which is central to its themes.
