In the second book of the neon gods series, Eros, son of Aphrodite and Psyche, daughter of Demeter, will get into a marriage of convenience when Aphrodite orders Eros to bring Psyche’s heart out: He's a right hand killer and she becomes into his objective, he would rather not kill her since she was one of the few people who made an impression on him. Psyche, on the other hand, is a plus size woman and somewhat and influencer…
She knows how the others critique, but behold that she shows a confidence that many female main character don’t show profoundly.
The first time they meet was when Psyche sees him bleeding during a party, and does not hesitate to tend him. But, like any other celebrities, they get caught by a paparazzi and their “secret relationship” gets blasted all over the news outlet… so in anger Aphrodite order Eros to kill Psyche. But again it took turn when he felt the need to protect her and suggested a marriage of convenience aka Fake Marriage trope.
Eros is always described as a “ferocious beast” or a heartless killer, but the author mostly showed Eros as an cold hearted but softy-only-for-his-woman-only hero. I would of liked to see him as the so-called beast he said oftenly. I so wish that we saw a more possessive side to these two.
PS: Eros is a soft boy and Psyche wears the pants in the relationship. (It probably runs in the family (Persephone & Hades))Z

"You're a gift, Psyche Dimitriou. A
fucking gift."

“The woman showed me kindness once, and then I essentially followed her home like a feral cat and forced her to marry me.”

TW: fat shaming; sexual content; toxic parent and child relationship; gun violence.

Electric Idol is the second in Robert’s Dark Olympus series and if you haven’t read Neon Gods yet I HIGHLY recommend it! It was one of my top books of the 2021.

In this book we meet Psyche and Eros. Psyche is sister to Persephone and one of the many daughters of Demeter. Eros is the cold, hard weapon of Aphrodite. When Aphrodite puts a hit out on Psyche, the only way to keep her safe is to marry Eros. What can go wrong?

I loved this book 😍The pacing was perfect and the smut was top shelf. I’ve come to realize a Katee Robert book is an instant read for me. I know I’m not getting into it for much of the plot, but it’s still there to hold enough interest that I don’t feel like I’m reading pure porn 😂

I loved seeing the relationship develop between Psyche and Eros ❤️ I’ve never been a huge fan of their story until now to be honest. But a fake marriage trope always gets me.

I also loved the plus size girl representation! So many books are focused on slim women or those with “perfect curves” when that’s just not reality. Women with different bodies deserve love and romance too! We as a community can and should do better 🖤

Compared to Neon Gods, Electric Idol is a rom-com, but in an incredibly hot way. The diversity in Katee Roberts books always blows me away,
as a curvy girl myself I always appreciate a curvy female m/c, and as a pansexual, seeing the represented in this book was incredible.

[second read, September-October 2023]
Rating raised from 3.5 stars to 4.

Me last year: Eros is being an asshole!!
Me now: Meh. I’ve suffered through a whole book of Dante Russo. This is nothing.

I was curious to see if my opinion would be different this time around, if this book still fell in last place in my Dark Olympus series ranking. While I can now say that I’m considerably fonder of Eros and Psyche—due largely to the parallels between them, Tink and Hook, and another of my favorite, unrelated fictional couples—that stance yet remains the same.

It really is interesting to me, how this pans out. That this is the Dark Olympus equivalent of A Worthy Opponent, my favorite Wicked Villains book and overall favorite Katee book, yet my least favorite in its own series. That, somehow, I just never formed an attachment to Eros and Psyche the way I did Tink and Hook, even though I should adore both ships.

Tastes really do be weird like that.

[first read, February 2022]
I was so excited for this book, both because I loved Neon Gods and because I haven’t seen any other retellings of the Eros and Psyche myth.

Unfortunately, though it was a quick read, Electric Idol wasn’t as entertaining to me as its predecessor. While I did really like Psyche, the same wasn’t true about Eros. His possessiveness toward Psyche was off-putting. I can’t say they had no chemistry, because they did, but I wasn’t really invested in their romance. In the last book, I was so distraught by the idea of Hades and Persephone not being together; in this one, I found myself mostly indifferent to the relationship and whether or not it lasted.

Similarly, in the last book, the final chapters were super intense; I sped through, needing to know if everything would work out. This time around, it felt very anticlimactic. There were a couple of impressive twists, but my point stands.

The best part was the side characters. I love the Dimitriou sisters, as well as Helen, Eris and Hermes. Every mention of Persephone and Hades made me ridiculously happy, and their cameos? I was through the freaking ROOF. To be honest, I kind of wish we’d seen a bit more of them. Also, I don’t think they got officially married in Neon Gods? So the fact that I didn’t get to see their wedding? RUDE.

I’m joking but also not.
(2023 Liv: I stand by this.)

Anyway, criticisms aside, Electric Idol wasn’t a bad book. I liked one of the protagonists, loved most of the side characters, and was living for the banter between Eros and Psyche. I’ll definitely be reading the next book, and also probably rereading the first because I miss Persephone and Hades. They’re the best.

Representation
  • fat bisexual protagonists
  • pansexual protagonist
