This is a book of two halves, you’ve got Tommy the boy and Tom as a man. The chapters flit between the two time lines but I felt this was done quite smoothly and I didn’t find this confusing. For me, Tommy’s story was the more enjoyable, although I guessed pretty early what the twist would be. The Hollywood of this era felt very glamorous although it showed that making films isn’t always quite the glamour and glitz you’d expect. Tom as an adult was an ok story, although it felt like it took a while to get going, and the trial of his son wasn’t really that gripping.

On another note I was surprised to see mention of the fact that Tom had checked into the W hotel in LA at the beginning of one of the chapters. He describes the lounge as all darkened mirrors and everyone seemed to be half his age. Back when travelling and holidays were allowed we had a road trip finishing in LA and after a long car journey turned up at the W hotel and felt very un-trendy compared to the other guests !! His very brief description did make me chuckle and took me on a little memory trip.
