I listened to the audiobook narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds. I read the physical book a few years ago and enjoyed it but never finished the series, and since I have a commute to work every day I thought I'd try out the audiobook. Reynolds did a phenomenal job bringing Darrow and others to life with his narration and  I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the book.

This book follows a boy crafted to lead a rebellion against a caste-based society that is reinforced by selective breeding. Also, it's on mars.

It starts with a close look at the rough life in a low-caste mining community before throwing you into a Hunger Games-esque war simulation.

This book has a great premise, but the level of brutality was hard for me.

I would recommend checking out this book if the description intrigues you, but maybe look at the content warnings before diving in.

This book and series is very very grim dark. In my experience this is overlooked by reviewers who gush over the overall story and world building which is great but won’t prepare you for how dark this world is. I could only make it 100 pages into book two when I felt nauseous and dnf the rest of the series. Buyer beware.

So many people told me that I would love this book......and so many people WERE COMPLETELY RIGHT!!!!
If you've never picked up Red Rising, you need to. It's amazing! (Unless you don't like Sci-fi, then just ignore this whole post). The first 6 chapters were a little slow because they have to build the background for why the main character, Darrow, is the way he is. After that, the book immediately picks up pace and begins to draw you in! (I've heard from many that the following books are even better).
The story is set way into the future (like 700 years I think) where humans have expanded across the galaxy trying to populate all the planets. They have sent some ahead to toil and prepare for the rest of mankind. One day, those toiling will be able to see the fruits of their labor.....or so they are told.
Darrow is one of those sent ahead (well, his ancestors were, he was kind of born already there). He's one of the best of his tribe and aspires to become the favored tribe so they can get all the delicious foods like sugar and honey. But when he does, something bad happens and he ends up waking on a very different place with a very new mission in mind.
You have to check this book out! I can't even tell you any of the best parts because it would ruin some of the storyline for you. I promise, though, it's good!
As far as my favorite character, that would be Eo, Darrow's wife. They're interactions with each other reminded me so much of me and my husband. She, the gentle caretaker who cleans and bandages his wounds. Him, the rage-filled risk taker willing to burn himself in order to provide more for his wife. Also, she has such passion and drive to make things better and feed the hungry.
There is a moderate amount of cursing, however, it seemed to fit all the scenarios it was in.
