This book just felt like a Hunger Games Clone to me. I think it was to set up the financial success for the series to get published, but it felt uninspired.

Short review: I guess I like science fiction if it is set in a world where life is basically like on Earth.

Nihil novi sub sole

Although Red Rising may appear to be an amalgamation of all the coming-of-age and utopian literature we have encountered as teens, this does not necessarily mean it is bad. Yes, there are many "borrowed" characters, motifs and twists. Nevertheless, the book is still enjoyable. In fact, the story actually made me giddy with excitement sometimes.

My two minor issues were:
  •  It seems that both Greek and Roman mythology and expressions are in use in this world, which could potentially make sense, but so far it seems odd.
  • There was a slightly homophobic remark when two guys were sleeping next to each other. ("Wonder which is Romeo?")

Usually I stay away from sic-fi but I was persuaded to read this.

And I’m glad that I did.

It’s a very raw and real and heavy story.

I love the concept, the dialogue, along with the clear changes characters experience. Even the inner monologues changed as time went on. Very well thought out.

This book is a very dark hunger games full of vengeance, death, loads of swearing, and frequent discussion of sexual assault. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone and wish I had DNF.

Take a shot everytime Darrow mentions his hands.

Don’t think i’ve ever read a book that made me sit up in shock and anticipation so much. A dark, dystopian, incredibly well written adventure that immediately gets you hooked into the universe Brown has created.

Almost every character is presented as complicated and fleshed out
(occasionally when unnecessary, the book did try to make me feel bad for a r*pist for half a page)
and you constantly switch from loving Darrow to becoming incredibly frustrated at him. The world building for this series has began fantastically, so much so that I actually became a bit annoyed when we left this world to enter the ‘game’  for the remaining 3/4 of the book. The action scenes might be some of the best i’ve ever read.

Overall this first entry has got me incredibly excited for the rest of this series where we’ll become more immersed in this ‘society’ of humanities far-future solar system and the adventures of Darrow.
