I got bored. The book is predictably dystopian. 

I’m all for rallying the people against the oppressors, I think these stories are truly important, however there has to be a way to get the point across in less pages or with faster pacing. 

Also… you can tell a hetero-cis-male wrote the series.

Very fast paced—too fast most of the time, and often felt rushed—and engaging. The first person perspective grew on me as the story progressed (even though I really don't like first person point of view), particularly because of the protagonist, Darrow. Overall, it's solid start to the series. I just wish there were more moments for Darrow to process things and for scenes to last a little longer rather than jumping forward in time the following paragraph.

7/28/23: changed rating from 3.75 to 3.5. The pacing of this book has just not aged well in my mind. It's too fast and makes the book feel cluttered.

I really liked the concept and development of the idea of this book. The one thing I will say is that the depiction of women wasn't great and made me hesitant to keep reading. However, it did get better by the end so I hope that continues into the next books.
