A good way to pass the time on a long layover and flights - the narrator is very soothing as is the village of Three Pines - but waaaay too long and not particularly gripping. Tedious in fact. Definitely not her best.

Another three stars for Gamache. I think I may have come to the end of the road with Three Pines. I am finding that the books are laborious to get through, and far too wordy. The three stars I’ve given this one are actually quite generous. I thought the entire book plodded along at a snail’s pace and there was just no suspense. Entire chapters were devoted to deep dives into Gamache’s mind. And what a murky place that was this time! The book takes place in Three Pines during the Christmas break after Covid. Someone is found dead outside on a bitterly cold New Year’s Eve. There were lots of trips back in time to old archives (which seems to be a recurring theme in this series), and even a glimpse of the LBTQ life. It seems like Louise Penny has ticked off a few of her boxes with this book. I’ve given the book three stars because of Penny’s writing skills and because of Ruth Zardo, who is by far my favourite character in this series.

A really enjoyable read. I loved the villagers and their interactions with one another. They all had such distinct personalities, and they felt real. I thought they hemmed and hawed too much near the end when they talked about the murder, but other than that I loved it.

The trend unfortunately is downward in this series. Although lovely to be back in familiar ground in this book the plot & the crime is padded more than a Canada Goose jacket and just goes on and on and on in circles before finally resolving itself.
Very much cameo roles from the rest of the villagers.

I gave this a 3 because of the MK Ultra and Sudanese stories. Otherwise, it was way too long. They sat around and talked about the same three characters ad nauseam without there ever really being new or compelling information. I also hated her describing Idola as flat faced. It felt like cheap description of real people.
