Honderd jaar geleden dwaalde een vrolijk, 11-jarig meisje met goudblonde lokken en grote stralende ogen door het bos. Niets vermoedend joeg zij achter een konijntje aan. Het is een verbazend boek. Het is een echte horror en het smaakt naar meer. Het is anders dan Stephen King, maar toch geeft het je wel dezelfde spanning mee. Toch zijn er vragen waarom de auteur het zo heeft geschreven.

John Saul is geboren in 1942 in Pasadena, Californië. Hij groeide op in Whittier en haalde zijn diploma in 1959 van de Whittier High School.
Na verschillende opleidingen aan net zoveel beroepsopleidingen te hebben gevolgd zonder het behalen van een diploma of graad, besloot hij van school te gaan en auteur te worden. In de daarop 15 jaar schreef Saul verschillende manuscripten en had hij verschillende baantjes. geen enkele uitgever zag iets in zijn verhalen, totdat zijn agent bij Dell terecht kwam. Daar wilden ze niets kopen, maar vroegen ze hem of hij een psychologische thriller kon schrijven. Saul maakte een verhaallijn, schreef het uit en hoopte dat het goed genoeg was. Zowel zijn agent als Dell waren laaiend enthusiast en zagen in dit verhaal een bestseller. Dell pakte groots uit. Advertenties en TV spots voor deze onbekende auteur werden gemaakt. En het slaagde. Saul werd in een klap wereldberoemd. Suffer the Children was geboren. Alle boeken die erna kwamen kwamen wel in de Bestsellerlijsten en zijn boeken werden wereldwijd uitgebracht en in verschillende talen vertaalt. De boeken werden uitgegeven door uitgeverijen die zijn verbonden aan Random House. Naast auteur is Saul ook acteur, scriptschrijver en is 1 van zijn boeken in 1984 uitgebracht als film.

I feel like the ambiguity of the ending saved it. Otherwise, it was a decently fun romp but nothing incredibly special. The story as a whole is dragged down by the out-of-date prose. It was written in the late '70s but still, my bias is clear. We again get the tired trope of Child sociopath, but less problematic than most as mental health is presented with a decent amount of thought and nuance. Its closer to 4 stars than 3
I read this book many years ago (early 80's), so I can not give an accurate review. I have it listed in my records as a "good read".

This was creepy and weird, very grotesque.

The story itself was creepy, unsettling and made me furious at times, since Sarah couldn't defend herself.
But at times it felt to drag on. I flew through the first 100 pages or so and had to work my way through the rest.
Jack and Rose killing themselves or "disappearing" wasn't unexpected, but I just wish we would've had more of the build up to that.
I was so happy for Sarah, only for her mind to break again. Poor girl.
I'm not sure whether I like or hate Elizabeth. On one hand I know she is pretty innocent and repressed most of it, but at the same time I can't help but dislike her.

Though I did not rate this 5 stars, this is definitely a favorite of mine.
I was discouraged by the size of this book at first, just looking at it in its paperback form was menacing.
But the cover kept drawing me in and here I am, 400 pages later, not regretting the lost sleep I've had because of this book.
Elizabeth was the very perfect character, as was Sarah. It all seemed to be a series of unusual events and bad timing. A self-fulfilled prophecy.
I will have to say, I was annoyed by the ending but mostly because I wanted the secret to be found out. I wanted so badly for them to find something, accuse someone other than those so obviously suspects. But either way, I loved it. And it kept me in a choke hold until I finished.
Honestly, I'm not sure it's let go of me yet actually. All I can think about is how Sarah has felt, what she's really seen, and if she could have done something different.

Wow....this book was...
Strange. I don't know how else to put it really. I mean I enjoyed it and couldn't stop reading it, but it was quite disturbing at times too. Basically the story takes place inside a family where there is legend of a family curse. So they black out and do things that they otherwise wouldn't do. Especially the daughter who gets possessed by a dead relative who is out for revenge. The entire time I was reading this, I was hoping Sam and Dean would drive up in their Impala and fix it all by finding the body and burning it, but instead, the children had to suffer, hence the title.
I took me a long time to think of what I wanted to say in my review, and even what to rate it, because I just feel different now. Like there were times when I felt uncomfortable reading, but kept wanting to read on, and then there were other times when I was constantly wondering what was gonna happen next. It isn't 5 star worthy, and it definitely isn't in the 3 star ratings because of how engrossed I surprisingly got into the story.
So, if you like thrillers, check it out!
