3.5, pending a second read next year. I genuinely enjoy the concept and most of the characters are engaging, but there are a few things that bother me. The constant references to even the strongest women by their sexual value/how they relate to their bodies is off-putting. There are a bajillion characters that it’s almost not worth paying attention to the names of the non-POV players. The story feels bloated from both of these factors.

I plan to read the published series in full next year (and in a timely manner) and will change my rating/review accordingly.

I think that since I'll be thirty soon...it's OK if I descend into unadulterated dorkdom. I grew up on the Lord of the Rings and have had my secret flings with Harry Potter books but never considered myself a particular fan of fantasy. Maybe I have just been reading WAY too many 19th century realist novels over the past decade and now my brain is rebelling? I don't know... but I plowed through this book and I want to continue the series. I mean, it's like feudal England but the dragons are real. I'm cool with that.

Made it to page 362, haven’t read it in a year, remember nothing. I will try again in 2919!

3.5 stars out of 5 ✨

**Minor Spoilers** Very good. The TV show, which I watched first, is very faithful to the text, to the point of using the same dialogue sometimes. Divergences come towards the middle of the book when the battles are being described; they must have been too complicated to show on screen. Regardless, the sense is maintained well. A major difference is the Hound and how he is portrayed. He and Sansa have an unusual connection in both the book and the show, but the mood is slightly different. In the show, Littlefinger tells Sansa the story of how the Hound was burned, and considering his reputation I took the story with a grain of salt. However, in the book the Hound tells Sansa himself when drunk which lends more authority to the tale. Looking forward to the next book.

This is a tough one for me. I have to put this down without finishing. Although the writing is interesting and when I'm reading it, I have no trouble staying involved, I have to force myself to pick it up. What bothers me about this story is that the bulk of the plot is about children who are facing horrendous struggles. And those struggles are mostly caused by entitled adults. I cannot enjoy stories in which children are treated as pawns.

Maybe at some point in the future, I will come back to it. But for my own peace of mind right now, I have to move on.

This book (series) gave me an answer to the question "What's your favorite book?"
Enthralling read!

Didn't enjoy this as I was expecting to.

I've watched the TV series, I enjoy fantasy books, I will happily work my way through epic series. It was looking good.

The chemistry just wasn't there, I didn't like the writing style; life is too short to read books like this if you don't like them. If I'm looking for a struggle, I'll head over to the depressing Russian epics shelf.

In this case, I'm walking away 75% through - it isn't going to get better, at least not for me.

wow. that was REALLY good. not quite five stars, btu a true experience that all should try. that ending? wonderful! full of grief and heartache and twists and turns you'd never see coming. on my way to the second book as i write this. what a wonderful novel.
