This is one of those series that will be remembered forever. And I'm sorry but if you compare Martin to Tolkien then you're doing it wrong. Both wrote for a different audience and they both have a really different writing styles.
Having that out of the way I have to say that all 5 books were a wild ride of great storytelling, world building and character development. And by all 5 I mean it. A Feast for Crows AND A Dance with Dragons are great books that expand on the world building and the general themes of the story. I'm sorry but if you thought these books were bad cause they had no action in them then you read them wrong. The books were never about pure action.
From "A Game of Thrones" to "A Dance with Dragons" a thrilling ride of grey characters the constant fear of your favorite characters dying and intrigue after intrigue. Still waiting on "Winds of Winter" and "A Dream of Spring" though. I hope they'll come out soon.
I would recommend this series to everyone, even people who don't like fantasy.
What I would not recommend is to compare this great series to the tv show Game of Thrones. It calls itself an adaptation but it's more of a badly written fanfic produced by two knuckleheads who have no idea what a theme or even consistency is. If you're reading the books first just watch the first 3 seasons. After that it goes all downhill. If you watched the show first then please try to forget everything you think you know.

Has become one of my favorite series of books.

I'm generally not a fan of fantasy, but somehow I managed to read the entire series. It can get boring at times, sometimes I skip ahead to characters (Dany, the Starks, Jaime, Brienne) I actually care about. There's only so much description of food and clothes I can take lol. I have some criticism like the amount of sexual assault written and the age of the characters. I think the Starks, Dany, and the other teens should have been aged up. I think if you can write magic and dragons into a story, you can make your characters older and not have casual sexual assault described in here.
Anyways, I'm STILL waiting for the final books. I need to know how it ends

A great fantasy series that keeps you enthralled from the start. Following each of the characters throughout the book is like experience these events with them. The author does great with imagery throughout and picturing everything being described

Over 3 years ago I started reading these books. Today I can finally say I’m finished, but I know, I know.. there’s a couple more to come out someday and when those days come, I will read them.

My overall fair rating to the 5 book set is 5 stars. My absolute favorites were 1-3 and the last one. I can see myself reading the first three again. I’m happy that I’m done for the time being. George R.R. Martin’s writing blew me away in a few books. The stories helped me through some very difficult times in my life. If you need an escape.. read his books!!

I watched the first two seasons of the Game of Thrones series on HBO. The third was the first of the series that I read, and I was not as interested as I thought I would be. I think I would have enjoyed the book more had I read the first two, but that would have required an additional 2,000 pages...I think I'll stick to the TV show.
