I am a sucker for stories about second chances and I absolutely love all time travel books so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I really enjoyed The Second Chance Year. The premise is simple, but simplicity works and I’m totally fine with that. No big surprises, no plot twist, no shocking reveals out of nowhere. It was kind of straight, to the point, and beelined to deliver its message. Right from the beginning you know where this story is heading and where it’ll end - but sometimes, that’s all we need for there is comfort in knowing the destination and enjoy the ride.

Sadie lost everything in her Very Bad Year; her boyfriend of three years dumped her, she got fired from her job as an assistant pastry chef at a renowned restaurant, she lost the dream apartment she could no longer afford, and all of her savings for opening her own bakery evaporated. So when she was granted with one wish, she wished a second chance to do over the Very Bad Year.

I really liked the learning curve Sadie went through. During her second time around she tried to not lose everything (her boyfriend, job, apartment, dream fund) but lost herself instead. A great message that worked well with the going back in time set up. Sadie chasing what she thought she wanted, while what she really wanted was right in front of her was quite obvious - this book was not too subtle on that front, so to say, but it was still very entertaining and I liked it a lot!

Time-loops are my favorite trope, so I must admit that I was a bit critical of this book.

While I enjoyed it, I found it to be quite formulaic for the genre.

I think many people will enjoy this book if they don’t usually read books with these tropes.

It’s a quick read, though.
