wow. Tasha Suri is a force to be reckoned with here in fiction: her prose is lyrical and stunning; her worlds rich and robust; her characters complex, and I couldn't get enough. I am a big fan of epic fantasy, of complexity, of chaos, of rebellion and revolution, of political intrigue, and especially of sapphic couples, and all of those loves (and more) bloomed abundantly here. beautiful book, just stunning

Tasha Suri writes a story quite unlike any book I've ever read before. Her prose and the inventive use of multiple POVs truly create a multi-layered world the encaptures the reader. I can honestly say I've never read a book quite like it, in the absolute best of ways. The world building was so in-depth, so meticulously thought out, that I felt I completely understood the world Suri created. Reading this was like solving a puzzle without meaning to. Suri's writing guides the reader along a truly incredible path that allows the reader deepen their understanding of the world without having to consciously try to decipher it. This book is what I would consider the very best of the high fantasy genre.

This book drew me in right away. None of the characters are purely "good" or "evil", and their motives become very clear in the story. It was a fast read, considering the length of the book, helped by the fact that almost every chapter ended in a cliffhanger - but near the end, that was also what started to bother me. Some of the emotional moments in the story could have used a little more time to breathe, but didn't get a chance because the writing style demanded you to read on, on, on. But aside from that small annoyance (I mean, it's not the worst thing to have to say about a book :P), I adored the intricate worldbuilding and the magic, and the way even plants brought both beauty and destruction.
The only thing I still don't quite know how to picture (maybe it's a fault of my own imagination or I missed something?) is the climb of the Hirana. It returned several times, but somehow my mind remained undecided on how it would look, and that distracted me a little.
