What a fascinating world and magic system!  Metaphysic was a little too unclear/handwavy in places, and some character arc beats felt a little awkward, but overall, a very good read.  I look forward to reading the next one.   

I appreciated that many characters had shades of grey or at least were treated in ways that showed they were more complicated than just pure malicious evil (the exception being Malini's brother).  The reveal of the tragedy of the temple children and betrayal by the Elders is heartbreaking and infuriating, but believable.

A strong beginning for the trilogy, with a fascinating — though rather vague — worldbuilding and complex female characters to drive the narrative forward. I wasn't extremely sold on Priya and Malini's chemistry, but their relationship is well developed given their circumstances, and it looks like it will get even more complicated going forward. Shit's about to get messy and I can't wait to watch.

This is a solid start to a new fantasy series. The beginning is a bit info-dumpy and there are parts of the story that are a bit slow, but I love our characters and this intrigue of the world. This has forest magic that corrupts people which is a trope I love plus a variety of different own world gods and religions. Plus a sapphic romance.
