What an EPIC fantasy. I really enjoyed the layers to this. The politics the complex relationships (not just romantic), moral ambiguity, commentary on power, very cool stuff!! My main critique was the multiple povs was a bit confusing at times, but the story was worth it.

Pacing was a little weird, especially at the end
where the characters fork off and the steam the plot had picked up just deflated,
but overall a good read. Intrigued by the idea of
spirits that are presented as not exactly good being aligned with a main character
. Probably will read the sequel!

Did enjoy some of Suri's choices on how the two main characters interacted even as they
made their feelings known. Malini holding a knife on Priya as a good thing in the moment? Exceptional.

I really enjoyed this book, with it's beautiful, lush prose, in-depth world building and politics, and complex, flawed characters. I definitely feel as if a re-read is on the cards at some point, perhaps once the whole series is out, so I can really get everything out of this book, from the imagery and symbolism of fire and flower, to the depth of the characters and their relationships. I'm definitely reading the next one.

A lot of what didn't work for me were the writing choices, this book did two things that I find exhausting which is over explaining concepts and a million POVs. And most of those POVs exist to overexplain the plot and what is going on with each piece as it moves. I just wish the author had more faith in her readers. This book is 500+ pages but feels like a prologue to the actual story. This isn't to say others won't like this book, it's got a lot going for it, particularly the rot and associated magic systems, and interesting characters (Bhumika!) But the structure was hard for me to get past

An amazing start to a complicated, rich, well drawn series with engaging characters and intriguing world building.
