“to call out
and to cry out
for freedom to live
and freedom to laugh”
‘Oxygen Mask’ is a graphic novel which depicts the metaphorical sense that society can’t breathe. Drawn from the racial issue-the death of George Floyd, and the Covid-19 pandemic, at the time, and about how society should learn to appreciate the small things more and be grateful for what we have. There is a political poetry to it.
“and freedom to breathe”
“because what is life in a house underwater”
“because what is life in a house underwater”
The simple storytelling paints a picture of how we struggle to breathe. The illustration portray a sense of there being no hope at the time, yet as the story progresses we see towards the end a sense of hopefulness in the fact that there is breath, we’re just looking in the wrong places.
“and I wonder if maybe an oxygen mask is hiding amongst the crumbs of memories…”

I liked it! It captured the feeling of being stuck with my family during the pandemic pretty much spot in. Also the artwork was gorgeous!
