The day I handed over my love to him was the first time a God fell to his knees, bowed his head, and prayed. He prayed because I gave him the one thing he could never control, and he never wanted to lose it

Hunting Adeline was toying with my feelings, it was a literal rollercoaster.

Let me start by showing you what I wrote down in my notes while reading the first 20-30% of this book:
"Doesn't have the same crack in it that book 1 had. So much horrible stuff happening but I don't care about any of it? Did I lose all of my human emotions, did my taste in books change or was this just written badly?"

Followed by this sentence around halfway through the book:
"Actually pretty fucking good."

Now, let me tell you that I think the story started pretty weak and I only really started caring about it when the Culling happened. And then it just got better and better and I had a LOT of fun reading this, which made me already think about giving it 4 stars as soon as I would be done reading it.
But then there's this opinion I have about the ending.

SpoilerThe whole time while reading this I was wondering how H.D. Carlton was dedicating so many pages of the book to Addie's kidnapping and then her recovery from it. While this part was well-paced and interesting, it left me wondering how the author intended to finish the plot with so few pages left.

It even got to the point where I only had 10% left of Hunting Adeline and I was still thinking about how there was no way in hell that there would be enough time to resolve the whole story before it ends.
Unfortunately my fears were realized as the ending was written in a rushed and wholly unspectacular disappointing manner. Carlton should've allocated more space for a longer and more detailed ending because the one we got was truly unsatisfying.
Claire's death felt too abrupt, the whole scene with her wanting to dominate the world and turn people into mind-slaves was weirdly unnatural, and Zade's "proposal" at the end fell flat and not as extravagant as I hoped it would be.

So with a really good and interesting main part of the story and a lacking beginning and ending, I decided to give it a 3-star rating. All in all it was just an "okay" book, and I liked the first installment of this duet more.
